How To Write a To Do List

What would you say if I told you that I could guarantee that you could become more efficient, improve your time management and achieve your goals quicker just by the use of my own formula for writing to do lists?

If you’re not a big, fat, loser, slob you would probably be listening intently!

Today I’m going to show you my way. The best way.

The get your fucking shit done way.

– My to do list for today (Yes I know I write like a 6-year-old)

Step 1. Wake the fuck up. Brush teeth, shower etc. Perform your morning rituals. This will allow for your brain to wake up. I usually write my list after a hearty breakfast as I feel more switched on and awake by then.

Step 2. Find a piece of paper. Or a piece of cardboard, or an old receipt or even your least favourite sister’s birth certificate. Whatever float’s your boat.

Step 3. Begin with the heading “Today I….”. By writing “Today I…” instead of something else like “Jordan’s dumb fucking list of shit to do…” you trick your brain into believing that you have already done the things you are about to write. This plays a trick on your subconscious and results in ‘What the mind believes, it achieves’.

Step 4. Rack your brains! Write everything down that you can think of that you need to get done today! Don’t put anything unachievable down and don’t write a list as long as a text-book. Only write what you think you can get done today.

Step 5. Keep it on you. If you leave home, fold it up, keep it in your pocket. It must be attached to you for the day.

Step 6. Mark them off. Draw a line through each task after completion. This provides you with a sense of accomplishment and the hunger to do more.

So there you have it. The most effective way to write a daily to do list.

The Power of Power Naps

The power of power naps

Okay let me set the scene. You are reading something. You know that what you are reading is important and necessary.  Your eyes feel dry, tired and warm and they long for you to close the blinds on your world. You shut your eyes for a few seconds. You could almost fall asleep while sitting at your desk. Your subconscious takes over and you submerge into a world of random thoughts and pictures. BAM! You force yourself to wake up and reopen your eyes to the bright world around you. Now you have had enough. You leave to go lie down and watch T.V. or scroll through Facebook, leaving your work unfinished and yourself disappointed for the rest of your day/night.

We have all felt this before. I have even done this before! But today I am going to share with you a trick I use to beat these unimpressive results time and time again.

I present to you the…

The Power Nap.

The power nap is simple, effective and it works.

How the power nap works:

1. Find a quiet room and keep the lights dim. (Never sleep in a room with total darkness as you may find it harder to wake back up).

2. Lie down. Somewhere soft is good. A bed or couch will do nicely.

3. Set your alarm clock for 25-30 minutes. This allows for 5-10 minutes to fall asleep and the remaining 20 minutes for the refreshing sleep time. Warning! NEVER GO LONGER THAN 20 MINUTES OF SLEEP or you will delve into a deeper level of sleep which is demotivating to wake up from and it will also leave you feeling groggy.

4. Close your eyes relax. Let your mind understand that “I have done all I can do for now. Now it is time for me to let my mind and body rest so that I can continue working later”.

5. BRRRIINNG! As soon as your alarm goes off jump straight out of your downed position and immediately begin moving around to allow the mind time to reconnect and fire up.

6. Continue with your work.

Now for anyone out there doubting the power nap, I’m not hating. Some people just don’t like them. Some people say it leaves them feeling groggy. However I find that 20 minutes of sleep prevents an individual from entering deep sleep which is what will make you feel groggy upon awakening.

Winston Churchill swore by power naps. He used to work 16 hours a day (a tremendous effort, as an average western work day is  8-9 hours). During World War II Winston would nap for an hour after lunch (I don’t advise this long, however it seems to have worked for Winston) then he would continue working up until the evening were he would nap for 2 hours. Then he would again reawaken and continue his work long past midnight.

John D. Rockefeller one of the world’s former great accumulators of wealth also swore by power naps. He would lie down on the couch in his office and take a half an hour nap in his office every noon.

So why not give it a try next time your gas tank is feeling empty and you’re just about ready to give up?

Sleep is for the dead

They say sleep is the cousin of death. So my eyes wide open cos’ a dream is kin to your last breath’ – Game

Here is the most complete list of information required to stop you from ever sleeping in again.

1. You are wasting your life sleeping: Every extra hour you spend in bed sleeping is another hour of your life YOU WILL NEVER EVER GET BACK. Would you rather stay in bed dreaming about some bullshit that doesn’t even make sense to you/you won’t even remember when you wake up or would you rather wake up and know what is to be ALIVE. The rapper Game says it best ‘They say sleep is the cousin of death. So my eyes wide open cos’ a dream is kin to your last breath’. Some people love sleep. I don’t. Sleep to me is only there for the purpose of recharging my batteries so I can wake up and kill it again the next day. I actually find it difficult to sleep. Sometimes I wake up excited with ideas for my website. When you have pure passion for the goals in your life, sleep will become a thing of the past.

2. If you sleep in late you will feel lazy for the rest of the day: This is completely true. Back when I used to occasionally slob it out during my time straight after finishing highschool I can remember waking up at around 10 or 11 a.m. on weekdays or sometimes even 12+ p.m. I remember when I awoke at these times finding it even harder to be motivated enough to leave the bed and begin my day. Doing this will make you feel like a slob. And when you feel like a slob you act like a slob. Don’t expect to wake up at midday pumpin’ to get your day done. Do you think Mr Trump wakes up at 12 p.m. daily? haha fuck no!

3. Competitive edge: While the rest of world is busy catching up on their precious Z’s you are wide awake, ready to kill and make the world your personal bitch! By getting up early you will be ahead of your competition by approximately 4-3 hours everyday. Not to mention the competitive edge getting up early will give to you. I remember watching a documentary on Mike Tyson and hearing him say that he used to get up to begin training at 3-3:30 a.m. in the morning due to the pure fact that he knew his opponent wouldn’t be up at that time which helped give him the competitive edge which made hin tougher than his competition.

4. Waking up early will make you tough and give you discipline: Waking up early will make you tough and provide you with mental discipline. I find that when I wake up early I feel mentally tough and ready to kill which then transpires into my other tasks for the day. Waking up early makes me feel like a million bucks! After a while waking up early will become second nature as your body clock and mental abilities adjust. I literally cannot even remember the last time I got up after 8:00 a.m. on a weekday.

5. Less distractions: If you wake up when the kids are asleep, when the corner store is still closed, when shitty infomercials are still on t.v. or when you’re texting friends are still asleep, HOW CAN YOU BE DISTRACTED? You will have the house all to yourself. Leaving you with the full opportunity to get all of your work done DISTRACTION FREE.

Okay so now that you understand the benefits of converting to early rising here are my own personal rules I use to make sure I get up early.

Buy an alarm clock with a snooze option:

You must have an alarm clock! Every night before I go to sleep I set my alarm 8.5 hours ahead of when I am going to sleep whether it be 9-11 p.m. Therefore I wake up between 5:30 – 7:00 a.m. My usual wake up time is 6:30 a.m. as I go to bed usually at 10:00 p.m.

Use the snooze option:

The snooze option allows you 10 minutes to slowly awaken from your slumber. I find that I feel more refreshed and ready to get up after hitting a 10 minute snooze as I find that it awakens me from deep sleep and allows me to return to a lighter stage of sleep, so that when my alarm wakes me up a second time I am immediately awake and alert and ready to get up and start my day.

8-8.5 hours required:

I find that I require 8-8.5 hours of sleep a night for me to fully function at my best capabilities the next day. You may be different. You may be lucky and only need 6 hours. Play around with it and see how much sleep a night you require.

Have something to get up for:

If you have something that you are excited about that you know you will be doing the next day then you will not want sleep in. I wake up everyday excited to work on my website. This is why it is so important to do things that you love because they act as a motivator for you to get up the next day.

Allow some morning light to enter your room:

In a way I am lucky that my bedroom currently has shitty blinds that allow for some light to travel in during the morning. Waking up to pitch darkness makes it more difficult to awaken. If light slowly enters your room in the morning your subconscious mind will take note of this which will send off alerts in your mind that the morning is coming which will help you to wake up feeling refreshed.
